NASC National Supplement Council
Many horse owners today find they benefit from taking supplements and want their equine companions to experience these benefits as well. But you should keep a careful eye out for supplement suppliers that disregard established FDA rules for product claims and instead take a “say anything” approach. They are fairly easy to spot if you know what to look for:

  • Words that state or imply the product will treat, prevent, cure or mitigate a disease. For example, “Relieves dry skin, itching and allergies.”
  • Use of any disease name or reference to a disease. For example, “Protects against laminitis.”
  • Any reference to a chronic condition. For example, “Combats chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis.”
  • Any stated or implied comparison to, or replacement for, pharmaceuticals. For example, “Reduces the need for prescription pain medication.”
  • Disease names disguised as product names. For example, “Arthri-Stop”

So how do you find suppliers that responsibly produce and market their products within the bounds of the law? Look for products with the NASC Quality Seal.

National Animal Supplement Council member companies have access to succinct labeling guidance that helps them follow the law and avoid making errant and egregious claims that mislead consumers and prey on their vulnerabilities.

Plus, products with the Quality Seal come from suppliers that have successfully passed an independent, third-party facility audit and maintain ongoing compliance with rigorous NASC quality requirements, which include:

NASC Seal of Approval
Remember, supplements are not magic bullets. They are designed to help support the normal structure and function of your horse’s body rather than correct an abnormal condition or disease. If a claim sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
